Cherokee County Sheriff’s investigators arrested a burglary suspect Thursday who allegedly gave himself away by snapping photos of stolen appliances in their original location, a foreclosed home, and then posting the images on Craigslist.
Adam Mazur, of Macon, was charged with burglary and theft by receiving stolen property and was being held on a $25,700 bond in the Cherokee Adult Detention Center, according to the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office.
The investigation began Monday, when a Fannie Mae employee contacted the sheriff’s office to report that a real estate agent was showing a vacant foreclosed home on Hardwood Lane in Ball Ground when she discovered its range, oven and dishwasher had vanished.
A Fannie Mae employee spotted the appliances, listed for sale on Craigslist, because the pictures showed the items still in their original locations in the vacant residence.
Detectives contacted the seller and arranged to meet him Thursday morning to purchase the appliances in the parking lot of the Home Depot on Ga. 92 in Woodstock. There, Mazur, 42, was arrested, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
The sheriff’s office urged banks, businesses and other owners of vacant homes for sale to protect their property by recording the serial numbers of appliances inside the homes. Without serial numbers, it’s difficult to determine if recovered or pawned appliances have been stolen.
