The victim and gunman in Thursday’s Auburn Avenue parking deck shooting death likely knew each other and agreed to meet there that afternoon, Atlanta police said Friday.

That meeting turned into an argument, followed by gunfire, police said.

The man who was shot got in his car and tried to escape by driving out of the parking garage and onto Piedmont Avenue.

He then crashed into an oncoming car and was found dead in his compact, four-door Chevrolet, detectives said.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office has not released the man’s name. Police have made no arrests and said neither the victim nor the shooter were students at Georgia State University.

Investigators continue to review surveillance video and are looking for witnesses in attempts to piece together what happened at the 170 block of Auburn Avenue around 3:45 p.m. The parking deck is for a condominium complex on that street.

Atlanta police Lt. Paul Guerrucci, commander of APD's homicide unit, did not release any information about the person in the other vehicle that was hit. That person did not suffer major injuries, Guerrucci said.
