Wills Park’s Wacky World in Alpharetta will be closed mornings through April 18 as crews remove three oak trees and trim an oak and a sweet gum that were found to be structurally weakened.

Wacky World, a children’s play area at 11925 Wills Road, will be closed to the public until 1 p.m. each day while Downey Trees Inc. conducts the trimming and removal.

“While we love the trees in our parks, once we learned the degree of decay of these five trees, we had to take immediate action to ensure the safety of visitors to Wacky World,” said Morgan Rodgers, director of recreation, parks and cultural services.

City arborists determined the three oaks have extensive internal decay and are a safety risk, officials said. The two trees to be trimmed have split into dual trunks, and the trimming will postpone their decline, but they ultimately also will have to be removed in the coming years.

Trees are ideally planted in early spring and late fall, so the three removed oaks will not be replaced until the fall, officials said.

Master planning for Wacky World and Wills Park is to take place later this year, and landscaping and tree replacement will be part of that process.
