Motorists can expect lane closures and heavy travel delays on Windward Parkway in Alpharetta as crews put a tunnel beneath the road for a northern extension of the Big Creek Greenway.

The project will affect Windward between Union Hill Road and Compass Pointe Crossing. Work is to begin Friday, May 15, and go for about three months, according to a city announcement.

Windward at this point has two eastbound and two westbound travel lanes separated by a landscaped median. The tunnel project will reduce vehicular traffic to one lane in each direction.

“As our contractors install each half of the tunnel, they will close both lanes of traffic in one direction,” beginning with the eastbound lanes, the city said. The other, westbound side of the road “will then be utilized to provide one lane of travel in each direction.”

When the first tunnel segment is completed, construction will move to the westbound side of the street, and those lanes will be closed. Information: https://bit.ly/2yrjSHL
