A contested City Council race and two homestead exemption referendums will be among the decisions facing Alpharetta voters in the Nov. 5 municipal election, city officials announced.

At the close of the qualifying period Wednesday, incumbent Council Member Dan Merkel faced challenges from Abu Bakkar Ngila Jalloh, a biomedical scientist, and retired IT manager Clifford Martin for the Post 6 seat. Mayor Jim Gilvin and Council Members Jason Binder and John Hipes are running unopposed.

One referendum question will ask Alpharetta voters if the basic homestead exemption — already the largest in Georgia at $4o,000 — should be increased to $45,000. Another will ask if the income cap for a $10,000 senior tax exemption should be removed; if the initiative passes, all older residents could qualify for senior exemptions totaling $25,000.

The last day to register to vote in the November election is Oct. 7. Early voting begins Oct. 14. Information: https://bit.ly/2I981BB
