Alpharetta eases open-container law

Aug 23, 2011

Cheers, Alpharetta residents.

The City Council approved a proposal Monday night that allows the outdoor sale and consumption of alcohol in the Downtown District during regular operating hours. Assistant City Administrator James Drinkard said the ordinance passed the Council unanimously.

The Downtown Alpharetta Trade Association pushed to change the city's alcohol laws in an effort to get more people downtown and help boost economic activity. The group sponsors a fall festival as well as other events, such as a farmers market.

The ordinance goes into effect immediately.

In May, the City Council voted 7-0 to allow people dining out to bring their own bottle of wine.
