Motorists should avoid downtown Alpharetta during the Thursday afternoon rush hour, the city says, as the 23rd edition of the Mayor’s Corporate Challenge 5K road race closes streets in and around the area.

The race, sponsored by the city and the Rotary Club of Alpharetta, begins and ends at City Hall.

Street closures begin at 4:30 p.m. with Park Plaza closed in front of the library except for traffic exiting the parking deck. For the 7 p.m. start of the run, Park Plaza will be fully closed between Academy Street and Haynes Bridge Road from 6:50 to 7:15 p.m.

Commerce Street eastbound from Market Street to Park Plaza will be closed from 6:50 to 8:30 p.m.; all lanes of Haynes Bridge between Old Milton Parkway and Academy, from 6:50 to 8:15 p.m.; eastbound Academy between Main Street (Ga. 9) and Westside Parkway, from 6:50 to 7:40 p.m.; one southwest-bound lane of Westside between Webb Bridge Road and Old Milton Parkway, from 7 to 7:45 p.m.; and one westbound lane of Thompson Street between Westside and Haynes Bridge, from 7 to 8 p.m.

“Heavy travel delays are expected on nearby streets,” the city said in its weekly newsletter. “Avoid downtown Alpharetta if it is not your destination.”

The event also will offer food trucks, sponsors’ tents and a DJ starting at 5 p.m. Activities should wrap up around 9:30 p.m.
