Alpharetta residents and others may soon be able to take home growlers of their favorite beer from brewpubs. The Alpharetta City Council approved the proposed ordinance change Monday night, with a second vote scheduled March 21.

City attorney Sam Thomas told council members that growler sales became possible as the result of recent changes in the state’s alcohol laws. The amendment to the city’s alcohol ordinance alters the definition of a brewpub and specifies that interested pub owners would need a package sales license, Thomas said.

The council also approved a proposal to name nine meeting rooms in Alpharetta’s under-construction conference center after longtime city families. The center is part of the second phase of development of the Avalon mixed-use development and is set to open in January.
