Robert Pitchford’s trip to Georgia proved to be a profitable one.

The tool and die maker from Birmingham, Ala., bought a Powerball Quik Pik ticket for June 24 at a QuikTrip on Lawrenceville Highway in Decatur and walked off with $1 million by matching the first five winning numbers, 3-5-10-22-32.

He claimed his prize Aug. 24 at Georgia Lottery headquarters in Atlanta after checking the ticket, which was tucked in his wallet. He later posed with his ceremonial check.

“I purchased a ticket for multiple draws,” he said. “I always come to the state line to check my ticket.”

Pitchford, 65, already has plans for the money. He expects to buy a new convertible, take a cruise and retire from his job.

The estimated jackpot for Wednesday’s Powerball drawing is $120 million to a single annuity winner.
