Agnes Scott College alumna Elizabeth "Libby" Rhett Jones has pledged $2.5 million to the institution, making it the college's second largest gift from a living donor.

The largest was $5 million from an anonymous donor in 2002.

The gift from Jones, class of 1973, and her husband, Gary Jones, is just the latest example of strong fundraising for the women's college, Agnes Scott President Elizabeth Kiss said in a news release Thursday. During the 2010 fiscal year, which ended June 30, the college raised $8 million.

Jones said she and her husband were motivated to give to the college because they believe Agnes Scott is poised to become a nationally recognized leader among liberal arts colleges.

"Agnes Scott has always empowered women, but I think it’s more important now than ever," Jones said in a news release. "Women are taking a more involved role in our world and I think it’s crucial that Agnes Scott stay at the forefront of education to help educate women to take active and responsible positions in our world."
