Potential pet parents can take home a new furry friend for free through Saturday, June 30, Gwinnett County Animal Welfare said.

The Gwinnett County Animal Shelter is offering free adoptions for all dogs and cats through the end of the month. Dogs usually have adoption fees of $90, and cats usually cost $30 to adopt.

Dogs and cats give birth to litters in high volumes during the spring and summer months, often filling local shelters with adoptable animals. Gwinnett County shelter staff decided to offer free adoptions to make room for as many animals as possible during the high volume season, a release said.

The shelter currently has nearly 200 animals in its custody, from puppies and kittens to senior dogs and cats. A rabbit and a small rooster are also available for adoption.

All animals are spayed or neutered before they go home with their new owner. They also receive a medical exam, vaccinations and a microchip.

The shelter is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday. It is located at 884 Winder Highway in Lawrenceville.
