Atlanta police are investigating why a newborn wrapped in a comforter was left in a hamper inside a closet Monday afternoon.

Fulton County marshals were evicting someone at a home along Kimberly Way when the baby was found, Atlanta Police Special Victim’s Unit Commander LeAnne Browning said at a press conference.

An hour after marshals called Atlanta police to investigate, the child’s mother arrived to the scene.

The woman, whose name was not given, was taken in for questioning, Browning said. The baby was taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.

Browning said the woman told police she left the child at the home while she ran some errands. The mother has two other children – ages 10 and 12 – who were at school.

The mom was staying at the home, but is not the primary owner, Browning said. Police did not release who owned the home.

No charges have been filed in the incident.

Browning said the mom has been cooperative, but that the “first and primary concern is the health of that baby.”
