Approximately 8,800 gallons of sewage spilled from a manhole near an assisted living facility in Lawrenceville on Thursday, the Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources said.

The spill happened shortly before 1 p.m. at 3100 Club Drive, the address of Delmar Gardens of Gwinnett. The spill was caused by grease, the water department said.

Crews responded at 12:53 p.m. and were able to stop the spill by 2:15 p.m. Some of the sewage entered an unnamed tributary of Sweetwtater Creek.

The department raked the area and spread lime powder in order to mitigate the effects of the spill. Signs were posted to alert residents to the spill and the Georgia Environmental Protection Division was notified. Exposure to raw sewage generally poses the risk of diseases and infections including gastroenteritis and E. coli.
