The driver of a second car that may have been involved in the death of a Stone Mountain High School student has turned himself in, DeKalb police said Thursday.
Charges still have not been brought against the 17-year-old Stone Mountain boy who was driving the car that jumped a curb and killed 14-year-old Tanesha Williams, a spokeswoman told the AJC. Police are trying to determine the involvement of the second car before deciding on any charges.
DeKalb police spokeswoman Mekka Parish said Shaheed Saunders, a student at Stone Mountain High School, was driving a green Ford Crown Victoria at a high rate of speed Wednesday when he lost control of his car as he tried to pass another in the 4600 block of Central Drive.
That is when Saunders hit three teenagers on the sidewalk, Parish said
Tanesha died at Grady Memorial Hospital, and the other two -- a 14-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy who were not named -- suffered several broken bones and they are in stable condition.
"At this point, detectives have been able to determine is the driver of the Crown Vic was attempting to pass a second car in that curve at a high rate of speed," Parish said. " The driver … lost control and ended up on the sidewalk. The driver of that second car came forward to detectives last night, and our detectives are still trying to determine his level of involvement."
