As metro Atlanta firefighters doused one blaze Tuesday that shut down a major interstate in one part of town, they shifted to another fire along an interstate in another part of town.

More than two dozen firefighters battled a fire at a business near I-285 southbound in DeKalb County, south of LaVista Road.

Four lanes were affected due to zero visibility, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Transportation reported. HERO units were also on the scene. The lanes were later reopened.

Heavy equipment was used to remove large bales of recycled cardboard boxes at the unidentified business. The bails appeared to be threatened by the fire.

Earlier, smoke from a brush fire had closed westbound lanes of I-20 in DeKalb before roads were reopened, officials said.

Several piles of debris alongside I-20 burned, DeKalb Fire Chief Edward O'Brien said. The debris was collected by the DOT, but it was not known who, or what, set the debris afire.

DeKalb firefighters also worked to keep the flames from spreading to nearby homes.

Westbound I-20 lanes were closed between Wesley Chapel and Panola roads. An AJC photographer at the scene said traffic was backed up at least two miles and motorists were standing on the interstate outside of their vehicles.

Staff photographer Curtis Compton contributed to this report.
