Local memorial services have been announced for an Army staff sergeant from Henry County who was killed in Afghanistan in July.
Army Staff Sgt. Eric Timothy Lawson, 30, died July 27 in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked the vehicle he was in with an improvised explosive device and small arms fire. A service is planned for 3 p.m., Sunday at the Merle Manders Conference Center in Stockbridge.
In an email, Stockbridge City Manager David A. Milliron wrote Lawson was a Birmingham native who was raised in Stockbridge. A 2001 graduate of Griffin High School, he enlisted in the Army in July of the same year. At the time of his death, Lawson had served four combat tours and was assigned to the 10th Transportation Battalion, 7th Sustainment Brigade, out of Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va. His decorations included a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart, according to the email.
A funeral was held Aug. 26, at Price-Helton Funeral Home, Auburn, Wash., which was also in charge of arrangements. He was buried, with full military honors, in Kent, Wash., at Tahoma National Cemetery.
Lawson is survived by his wife, Rashanna Lawson; son, Eric T. “E.J.” Lawson Jr.; stepdaughter, Le’Shanna Wortham; mother, Natalee Edge; father Timothy Rozell; and siblings, Kelvin Lawson, Victoria Freeman and Ashley Hurd.
