Supporters of forming a new City of South Fulton made their case that the city would be financially viable at a public meeting Thursday.

Rep. LaDawn Jones, D-Atlanta, hosted the meeting at the Coverdell Legislative Office Building in Atlanta. Supporters highlighted a Georgia State University study that found South Fulton would have plenty of money to provide police, fire and other services if voters approved the city. The GSU report, prepared last year, found the city could operate with a surplus of at least $3 million annually. You can read the full study here.

Jones is a co-sponsor of House Bill 165, which would allow residents of unincorporated South Fulton to vote in November on whether to form the new city. The bill has been assigned to the House Governmental Affairs Committee. Rep. Roger Bruce, D-Atlanta, said he is not sure when it will get a hearing.
