Interim Fulton County Police Chief Gary Stiles will be sworn in as the permanent chief at a ceremony Friday morning.

Stiles replaces former Chief Cassandra Jones, who retired last April. Jones came under scrutiny after a local television station reported she taught a weekly criminal justice class in the middle of the day and often worked from home on Mondays. Jones told the station she did not teach the class on police time.

Stiles, who served as assistant chief under Jones, was the sole finalist to replace her. He’s worked at the police department for 30 years. The county Board of Commissioners unanimously approved his appointment as permanent chief on Wednesday.
