As The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports today, Sandy Springs is investing about $160 million in a new city center in hopes of remaking the gridlocked Roswell Road area into a walkable downtown.

The community has changed dramatically over the last 60 years, as these two photographs of the intersection of Roswell Road and Hammond Drive show. The first – taken in 1958, part of a Georgia State University Library special collection – shows a developing but mostly rural outpost. The second – taken last week – shows construction of the One City Walk development at the same intersection. The development will feature 203 apartments and 8,000 square feet of retail space.

One City Walk is the kind of development Sandy Springs officials hope to encourage with their investment in the nearby city center. You can learn more about the city's plans here.
