Major Greg Barney Street?

Riverdale officials are considering naming a street after the popular 25-year veteran police officer killed last month during a police raid on a local apartment complex. The idea surfaced at a recent city council meeting.

“It was a general consensus that we name a street (after him). Our lawyer is looking at the logistics. There’s a lot that goes into it,” said Riverdale Mayor Evelyn Wynn-Dixon. “We haven’t formally discussed it. It was just brought up. Nothing’s been etched in stone.”

Barney was killed Feb. 11 while helping Clayton County police serve a no-knock warrant for drugs at The Villages on the River complex, across the street from the Riverdale police headquarters. Barney is believed to be the first Riverdale police officer killed in the line of duty.

Barney is survived by his wife and twin teenage sons.
