A major mixed-use project proposed near a busy Gwinnett intersection got the green light from county's Board of Commissioners on Tuesday night.
Protests over the controversial Facebook comments of Commissioner Tommy Hunter, meanwhile, continued for the 12th consecutive meeting. Hunter again left prior to the open public comment period during which several of the two dozen or so protesters spoke.
“He started this for each one of you, and for each of us,” regular protester Phyllis Richardson said. “He started it. But he is not man enough to stay here and listen to what his constituents, to what the citizens of Gwinnett County, have to say about the matter.”
The project would go up on about 22 acres near Ga. 120’s intersection with Meadow Church Road, just west of I-85 near Duluth. The development, which would also be adjacent to the headquarters of insurance giant Primerica, is slated to include just over 300 apartments, about 27,000 square feet of retail and a standalone four-story office building.
The “high-end, luxury apartment units” would be designed to “attract millennials and young professionals,” according to documents previously submitted to the county.
Shane Lanham, an attorney representing developer Legacy Partners LLC, said the project will “inject some energy into the 120 corridor.” He said Primerica had given the project its blessing.
The Board of Commissioners did so as well during its lengthy Tuesday night meeting, granting the necessary rezoning.
“Look forward to that development,” District 1 Commissioner Jace Brooks said after the board unanimously approved the proposal.
No one spoke in opposition of the development.
