Gwinnett County police are trying to reduce the number of delivery drivers who are robbed in the county.

The department has created a new anti-robbery initiative that will tech crime awareness and prevention aimed at delivery drivers and businesses.

The program, called Operation Safe Delivery, will begin in the county’s South Precinct, and may expand to other parts of Gwinnett. Officers are planning to visit all restaurants that offer delivery in that area. They’re beginning by offering restaurants information with driver safety tips, but will also offer crime prevention seminars and will work with restaurant managers to allow drivers to cancel deliveries if they feel unsafe.

With an increase in online and app-based food ordering, Gwinnett police said in a release, there has been an increase in delivery orders to vacant homes where suspects can lure drivers, then rob them.

Participating businesses will receive notifications as such crimes occur.
