Gwinnett County finalized Tuesday its acquisition of a chunk of land targeted for the expansion of the existing transit center near Gwinnett Place Mall.
The county’s Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to approve condemnation proceedings for the 5.8-acre property just to the east of the existing bus station between Satellite Boulevard and the mall’s Macy’s store. About $2.7 million will be paid to the current owner, Gwinnett Prado LP.
What the future of the Gwinnett Place transit center may hold, specifically, remains unclear. It's unlikely to become the "multimodal hub" proposed in Gwinnett's soon-to-be-finalized transit expansion study, but the center is already one of the county's busiest transit stations.
It is a key transfer point and four of the county's six local bus routes make stops there.
The property acquired Tuesday is the largest of four adjacent pieces that the county has set its eyes upon near the existing transit center. All told, the county expects to spend about $4.6 million to acquire roughly 10 acres.
