Four local governments are pitching in to restore the historic Rogers Bridge over the Chattahoochee River.

The steel bridge, built around 1900, was closed to traffic in the 1970s because of safety concerns. When restored, it will serve as a hub connecting walking and biking trails on both sides of the river, including the Western Gwinnett Bikeway along Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and greenways along Suwanee Creek and Ivy Creek.

Gwinnett and Fulton counties and the cities of Duluth and Johns Creek will each pitch in $25,000 toward the cost of designing the project. The Atlanta Regional Commission will cover the rest of the cost. The governments are pursuing grants to cover the cost of future construction.

On Tuesday the Gwinnett Board of Commissioners approved an intergovernmental agreement to restore the bridge. Gwinnett’s share of the cost with money from a voter-approved 2009 special sales tax for construction projects.
