Drivers who illegally pass school buses and think they have gotten away with it might find a surprise in their mailboxes under legislation approved by the Georgia House on Tuesday.
Senate Bill 57 originally dealt with driver's license regulations, but it was amended in a House committee to permit the installation of video cameras on school buses for the explicit purpose of catching motorists who illegally pass stopped buses.
The bill, approved 144-20 in the House with little debate, would allow law enforcement to review video taken from the bus and mail tickets to motorists. The amended legislation now goes back to the Senate, which must consider the House changes.
The bill would allow a court to determine that the vehicle's registered owner was driving at the time of the violation based on the video.
