DeKalb County Sheriff Jeff Mann cruised to victory in Tuesday’s election against former DeKalb County CEO Vernon Jones.

Mann, who was chief deputy under former Sheriff Thomas Brown, said he would maintain stability in a sheriff’s office with a history of corruption.

But Jones, seeking a return to elected office since his second term ended in 2009, said he would be the one to crack down on crime and dishonesty.

Several voters said they were cautious about putting Jones back in power, especially after he had run for seats in the U.S. House and U.S. Senate since leaving the CEO job.

“I think Mann would have the public’s interest more in mind than Vernon Jones,” said Natarsha Jackson after voting at Martin Luther King Jr. High School in Ellenwood. “We need someone new.”

Others said they respected Jones’ ability to fight hard for what he thinks is right.

“He’s adamant about what he believes in and will do all he can to make sure it happens,” said voter Kimberley Glover.
