More than 140,000 southeast DeKalb residents haven’t had a county representative for almost two years, a situation many see as a denial of basic rights.

Some are wondering whether the courts could get involved to end the political stalemate that has denied them a county commissioner.

Voting rights experts say it’s unfortunate that no one has been appointed to the seat that was once occupied by Interim DeKalb CEO Lee May, but they disagree over whether the predicament is a violation of laws meant to ensure democratic representation.
