A man stabbed and killed his co-worker in northwest Atlanta on Saturday night during a post-work argument, police said.

Atlanta police Sgt. John Chafee said officers were called to the 200 block of Morris Brown Avenue around 11 p.m. Saturday. They found Fred Barney, 43, of Atlanta, dead from apparent stab wounds.

Officers then canvassed the area, “located a possible suspect and detained him,” Chafee said. The suspect was identified as 42-year-old Jose Gonzales.

He was charged with murder, Chafee said.

“The preliminary investigation indicates the victim and suspect are co-workers at a construction company and they became involved in an altercation after work, which escalated to the stabbing,” Chafee said.

A knife was recovered at the scene.

On Monday, Gonzales was denied bond. He has a preliminary hearing scheduled for May 14.
