A proposal to create a city of Stonecrest along Interstate 20 is moving forward after a Georgia House of Representatives committee gave its unanimous approval Wednesday.

Stonecrest would include about 50,000 residents in southeast DeKalb, bordering the city of Lithonia.

The legislation, Senate Bill 208, already passed the state Senate last year and now will be considered by the House Rules Committee before it can get a vote in the full House. The measure passed the House Governmental Affairs Committee on Wednesday.

If the bill passes the Georgia Legislature, voters will decide whether to incorporate Stonecrest during a referendum.
