Brookhaven Mayor J. Max Davis, who is running for a seat in the Georgia House of Representatives, announced today he’s resigning from the city.

Davis is a candidate in a July 14 special election to fill the vacancy created when Rep. Mike Jacobs, R-Brookhaven, was appointed by Gov. Nathan Deal last month to serve as a DeKalb State Court judge.

Besides Davis, a Republican, three other attorneys are also campaigning:

Taylor Bennett, a Democrat and former Georgia Tech quarterback; Catherine Bernard, a Republican who fought Brookhaven’s redevelopment powers effort; and Loren Collins, a Republican and previous write-in candidate for Congress.

Davis said he was proud of his work as Brookhaven’s mayor since the city began operations in December 2012. He said he oversaw the creation of the city police department, the purchase of parks from DeKalb County and road repairs. His term was expiring this year.
