The Atlanta Braves on Thursday released a statement congratulating Georgia State University and its development team on their deal to buy Turner Field and redevelop the area after the Braves move to their new home in Cobb County.
“The Atlanta Braves congratulate Georgia State University and Carter in finalizing their agreement to redevelop Turner Field,” the statement said. “We’ve had a great relationship with Georgia State for many years and look forward to seeing their vision come to life. We will continue to work with all of the parties involved to ensure a smooth transition as we make our move into SunTrust Park.”
The Braves announced nearly three years ago their intent to build a new ballpark and an entertainment district near Cumberland Mall. SunTrust Park and The Battery Atlanta mixed-use complex are expected to be ready for Opening Day 2017.
On Thursday, city leaders and Georgia State and development partners Carter and Oakwood Development made public a finalized sales agreement.
Georgia State and its partners will buy Turner Field and surrounding parking lots for $30 million with a sale expected to be finished by Dec. 31. They plan to convert the Ted into a new football stadium for the Panthers and transform surrounding parking lots into a mixed-use community and southern extension of Georgia State’s campus.
