A man pulled over by DeKalb County police shot himself in the head around 4 p.m. Thursday before the officer could speak to him, according to police.

The man, whose name was not released, was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he later died, Capt. S.R. Fore said.

Police were attempting to stop the man for speeding on I-20 westbound just before Flat Shoals Road, Fore said. After pulling the car over, the man used his own gun to shoot himself.

The shooting closed several lanes of I-20 in the area for about two hours.
