Following Thursday’s public visitation, a private memorial service will be held today for longtime Channel 2 Action News anchor Jovita Moore. She died Oct. 28 of brain cancer at age 54.

At a Tuesday event at the Buckhead Club, a woman who received a scholarship in Moore’s honor from Dress for Success Atlanta talked about what the organization and Moore’s support have meant to her. DFSA provides business attire, job training and other services to help women succeed professionally.

The recipient, who didn’t want her last name used, gave these remarks:

On September 17, 2021, I was awarded a scholarship from Dress for Success Atlanta in honor of Ms. Jovita Moore at the Dress for Success EmpowHER Gala.

Getting the scholarship in her honor was a life changing moment for me because my daughter saw me in a way she had never seen me before. Now, my children can watch me as I pursue and complete my college education. In less than three years, I will go to law school and become an attorney.

Jovita Moore is a fearless example of what having a helpful heart looks like. The pleasure was all mine to accept the scholarship in honor of a woman who worked tirelessly for her community on and off the television. I watched her on the news when I was a teenager. Ms. Jovita Moore was a role model young girls aspired to be like because she had heart, beauty, and intelligence. She cared about issues that affected the people in Atlanta, and she didn’t mind bringing the truth to the light. I was devastated to learn that Ms. Moore had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer. I’ve heard the stories of how Ms. Jovita Moore would volunteer and help Dress for Success Atlanta. I appreciate Ms. Moore for helping DFSA because she was helping and impacting families by helping women like me.

The very first time I walked into Dress for Success Atlanta, I was homeless, unemployed, and fleeing domestic violence. I met Ms. Susan Bonds McCulloch, DFSA Executive Director, that day, and received more than just a nice suit. Little did I know, I had just walked into a sisterhood that would bestow a generous amount of support and knowledge upon me during my time of need. I was met with love and kindness right where I was. Dress for Success has empowered me mentally, emotionally, and financially.

Jovita Moore was and will always be a huge part of that because she was a part of Dress for Success from the beginning. She became a friend of the Executive Director of DFSA from their first conversation. Ms. Moore showed up with a willingness to serve and help wherever she was needed. She introduced companies and people who helped DFSA move into its new location and acquire new furniture. She also emceed a couple of DFSA events.

Ms. Moore is an inspiration to me because she was the embodiment of a Proverbs 31 Woman. She was hardworking, giving, powerful, and compassionate. Her presence will be greatly missed, but she will forever be a part of the DFSA family.
