An inmate died Saturday in the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center, a sheriff’s spokesman said Monday.

Cherokee sheriff’s Lt. Jay Baker said Demetrie Jones had been in custody since Dec. 10, when he was jailed on a probation violation.

Jones, 32, of Ellenwood, had “multiple medical conditions which required him to be in isolation, and was under the care of the jail medical unit,” Baker said in an email.

Baker said that an autopsy was performed Monday morning at the GBI Crime Lab.

“Preliminary indications are that Jones most likely died from complications from his medical condition,” he said.

A definitive cause of death will not be made until lab results are completed in about a month, Baker said.
