A Henry County sheriff’s deputy was killed in a car crash on his way to his Monroe County home Wednesday evening.

Thomas Palmer, 56, of Forsyth, had just finished his shift and was driving eastbound on Lassiter Road near Torbet Road when his 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer left the roadway and struck multiple trees, Monroe sheriff’s Sgt. Lawson Bittick said Thursday.

He was ejected from the SUV.

Emergency officials responded to the scene about 6 p.m. and rushed Palmer to Monroe County Hospital, where he died.

Palmer had worked with the sheriff’s office for nine years and was assigned to the Court Services Division, Henry sheriff’s Chief Deputy David Foster said.

“Deputy Palmer proudly served the citizens of Henry County and the Henry County Sheriff’s Office,” Foster said. “We ask that you all keep his family in your thoughts and prayers as they go through this difficult time.”

The deadly accident was Monroe County’s 13th of the year, according to the sheriff’s office.

“We extend our sincere condolences to the family, friends and co-workers of Mr. Palmer,” Bittick said.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

The crash site is about 60 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta.
