Halloween turned deadly Thursday night after separate shootings more than 2,000 miles apart left four people dead in California and a 7-year-old trick-or-treater critically wounded in Chicago.

In Orinda, Calif., four were shot to death and four others were wounded shortly before 11 p.m. at a Halloween party near San Francisco where about 100 guests attended, police said. The party was at an Airbnb rental in a neighborhood of multimillion-dollar homes.

According to The San Francisco Chronicle, the homeowner, Michael Wang, said he rented the property for what he thought would be a family reunion for a dozen people.

As officers responded to the residence about 10:45 p.m., four people were found dead on the scene. As of Friday, no arrests had been made.

Police said shots rang out about 5:30 p.m. as a group of men chased another man down the street of the Little Village neighborhood on Chicago’s West Side. A 30-year-old man was also wounded in the hand and taken to a nearby hospital in good condition.

Chicago police said Friday they are questioning a juvenile about the shooting, according to spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. In a tweet, he said the girl was believed to be an innocent bystander.
