A senior at Duluth High School is paying a high price for what he says was an innocent hug.
Samuel McNair has been expelled for the rest of the year for violating the Gwinnett County Public Schools’ rules on sexual harassment, according to Channel 2 Action News.
The suspension will ruin the student’s college plans, his mother told the television station.
School officials say they are unable to comment on the situation since it is a disciplinary matter. Sloan Roach, a spokeswoman for Gwinnett County Public Schools, sent the television station a statement that says, in part, when considering disciplinary action, “hearing officers consider witness testimony, a review of the known facts, and a student’s past disciplinary history.”
The incident was captured on a surveillance camera. A discipline report, filed by the teacher, describes the video. According to the report, McNair’s cheeks and lips touched the back of the teacher’s neck and cheek.
McNair said he did not kiss or sexually harass the teacher, who has not been identified.
Both McNair and the teacher said the hugging is not new. She said she has warned McNair that hugs were inappropriate. He said that this is the first time his teacher has complained.
