Gwinnett hotel temporarily evacuated after gas leak

April 14, 2015

A Gwinnett County hotel was evacuated for hours Monday after a carbon monoxide leak.

Gwinnett fire department spokesman Capt. Tommy Rutledge said the leak at the Hilton Atlanta Northeast hotel on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard was reported around 4:20 p.m. Monday. Seven hotel employees had grown “somewhat sickened,” Rutledge said, and were evaluated at the scene but not taken to a hospital.

Approximately 125 people, including hotel guests and staff, were evacuated.

Though an exact source was not determined, fire and gas crews ultimately determined that the elevated gas readings were coming from “a boiler room in the basement,” Rutledge said. Gas service was shut off to the building and hotel guests were allowed to re-enter shortly before 9:30 p.m.

“Those that want to stay can stay tonight,” Rutledge said, “but they just won’t have any hot water. … We’ve eliminated the hazard just by simply shutting the gas off.”

Rutledge said the hotel will have to contact technicians to locate and repair the leak.
