Several homes were evacuated Tuesday afternoon due to a grass fire spreading quickly east of downtown Athens. But firefighters were able to contain the blaze before homes were damaged, despite gusty winds.
Fire crews from several departments battled the blaze in the Lexington Road area, also affecting Edgewater Drive, Dekle Drive and Indiana Avenue.
About two dozen people were evacuated, with many finding shelter at nearby Cornerstone Christian Church.
No injuries have been reported. The cause of the blaze was not known.
