A 12-year-old girl who left the front door open Thursday morning as she ran inside her Virginia Highland home was greeted by a large man, according to police.

The girl, whose name wasn’t released, told the man to leave, but he instead told her to go upstairs and moved toward her, Officer John Chafee with Atlanta police said late Thursday. The girl rode her bike to school, but returned home around 9 a.m. to retrieve something she forgot, according to police.

“At that point the juvenile screamed, pushed the male out of the way and ran from the home,” Chafee said in an emailed statement. “The male then exited the home, got into a gold sedan and drove from the location.”

The male is described as having a large build, possibly in his thirties, with blond hair a little longer than a crew cut, Chafee said. He was wearing blue jeans and a blue jacket, and his vehicle was described only as a gold sedan.

Police are asking residents to be on alert for anyone acting suspiciously. Anyone with information on the suspect is asked to contact the Atlanta Police Special Victims Unit at 404-546-4260 or Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477.
