Savannah police arrested a Chatham County public defender who is accused of driving drunk and hitting a parked car last week.

Trevor King, 28, was booked at the Chatham County Jail on Thursday morning on charges of DUI and failure to maintain lane, according to jail records obtained by the Savannah Morning News.

King, who is the assistant defender to Chatham County Public Defender Todd Martin, was discovered standing on the sidewalk in the 1200 block of East Anderson Street next to a car about 1:30 a.m. Thursday, according to the police report. He told the investigating police officer, Jon Lindsey, “I hit a car.” Police say King was standing near an unoccupied maroon Buick during the conversation.

The report, obtained by the newspaper, revealed that King smelled of alcohol, and he told the officer he had been drinking in downtown Savannah.

King refused to take the field sobriety test when asked by Lindsey. He also refused to submit to the state’s chemical blood test, according to the report. The arresting officer was wearing an activated body camera at the time of the arrest.

Martin has not made a comment about his assistant public defender’s arrest.

According to jail records, King has been released from the Chatham County Jail.
