NEW CASTLE, Del. — A Georgia man driving a stolen SUV shot himself after Delaware State troopers blocked his way, police said.
New Castle County emergency officials learned of a stolen GMC Terrain on Interstate 95 on Wednesday afternoon, and troopers began to follow it from a distance because the driver might have had a weapon, police said in a news release Thursday. Meanwhile, the OnStar navigation system began to slow the SUV remotely until it was traveling about 5 mph and it turned onto the Airport Road interchange, police said.
After the SUV hit an unoccupied cruiser blocking northbound lanes, it stopped and troopers began communicating with the driver, who could be seen holding a handgun.
Troopers heard two gunshots from the SUV and continued to communicate with the driver. About 10 minutes later, the driver crawled out the passenger’s side window unarmed and was taken into custody. Inside, police found a 9mm pistol and two spent shell casings.
The 34-year-old Statesboro man was taken to a hospital, where police said he was listed in stable condition. The man hasn’t been charged, so police didn’t release his name.
