A Carroll County toddler was found dead in a storm drain after wandering off during a rainstorm that passed through the area on Thursday night, according to police.

The 2-year-old child vanished from his family’s home on Stripling Chapel Road near Highway 27 in Carrollton between 6:30 and 7 p.m., according to several news reports.

Realizing the boy was gone, family members searched the area and found him lifeless in a flooded drainage ditch, CBS46 reported.

Authorities with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office were called to the scene and the child was rushed to Tanner Medical Center, where doctors were unable to save him.

He was pronounced dead the same night.

It was not clear how the child managed to get out of the house, but there was no indication of foul play.

The toddler’s name was not disclosed, and authorities have not released any other details about the case.

Officials are continuing to investigate.
