State lawmakers set to return to Atlanta next week got a dose of good news: Tax collections for the month of December ticked up again.
Gov. Nathan Deal’s office said Thurdsay that tax collections totaled $1.75 billion. That’s an increase of $64 million, or 3.8 percent, compared to the same time last year. For the fiscal year, tax collections were up about 5 percent compared to the same point last year.
That’s important as Deal prepares to unveil a budget that is expected to call for increased education funding and provide for state-funded pay raises for teachers for the first time in five years.
The December increase was thanks to growing individual income tax and corporate tax revenue, along with increased revenue from a new vehicle tax scheme. That offset a roughly 4 percent decline in sales tax receipts.
