The GBI announced Friday it is investigating whether a newly sworn Dalton police officer molested a girl under age 10 multiple times earlier this year.

Officer Daniel Harrison Tolbert, 32, was arrested on December 18 charged with one count of child molestation involving the girl, said GBI Agent Sherry Lang.

The Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office contacted GBI after getting a tip regarding the molestation allegations Dec. 9, Lang said.

When the GBI investigation is completed it will be turned over to the district attorney’s office, Lang said. Tolbert, originally from Fayetteville, is being held in the Whitfield County Jail.

At the time of his arrest and suspension Thursday, he was in the department's field training program, and as a trainee, he was never unsupervised or alone while on duty, Dalton police spokesman Bruce Frazier told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Thursday.
