GBI: Deputy fatally shoots man during SWAT standoff in Fayette County

The man, who was firing a gun, said he would defend himself and threatened police, according to the GBI.

A man who called 911 and said “come on blue boys” while firing a gun during a standoff with deputies in Fayette County was shot and killed Sunday afternoon, according to the GBI.

The man, identified as 32-year-old Alonzo Leroy Landy, called 911 just after 3 p.m. and told the dispatcher he was shooting rabbits and “was telling people to get out of his head,” GBI spokeswoman Natalie Ammons said Monday in a news release. Gunshots could be heard during the call, and Landy told the dispatcher he was barricaded in his house on Ga. 92, the GBI said.

Deputies were then sent to the Fayetteville home for a wellness check as Landy remained on the line. That’s when authorities say he told them he would defend himself and threatened to “shoot cops if he had to.”

A family member alerted dispatch that Landy sent a group text message saying he “couldn’t handle it anymore,” prompting the Fayette County SWAT team to respond to the scene about 3:30 p.m. That’s when the GBI said Landy taunted the SWAT team and continued to fire his gun.

Negotiators determined Landy was heavily intoxicated, the release said, and reported that he appeared to be falling asleep while on the phone. A decision was made to deploy a robot inside the house.

At that point, Landy opened the door and began firing an assault rifle at the deputies, Ammons said. A Fayette deputy returned fire, striking the man multiple times.

Landy was taken to Piedmont Fayette Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

No officers were injured. It’s the 87th officer-involved shooting the GBI has been asked to investigate this year.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution also tracks officer-involved shootings that don’t involve the GBI, and those numbers sometimes differ from the GBI’s tally.
