A 21-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound after he shot at an officer in South Georgia on Sunday afternoon, according to the GBI.

Nashville police responded to a domestic dispute in the area of Mell Avenue in Berrien County around 3 p.m., the GBI wrote in a news release. At the scene, someone told an officer that Dearius Lamar Reed, who was involved in the argument, was driving a red Jeep, according to the GBI.

Police attempted a traffic stop when Reed drove by, but when the officer approached the vehicle, authorities said Reed fired and the officer then returned fire before approaching the vehicle again.

Reed, who was struck, was taken to South Georgia Medical Center, the GBI said. The police officer wasn’t injured.

The incident was the 86th officer-involved shooting the GBI has investigated this year.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution also tracks officer-involved shootings that don’t involve the GBI, and those numbers sometimes differ from the GBI’s tally.
