The funeral for Meadowcreek High School baseball coach and teacher Bond Crosby will be held Saturday, his family said late Monday.

Crosby, 28, died Thursday, a week after collapsing while playing a softball game. Crosby suffered a massive heart attack and underwent emergency quadruple bypass surgery at Emory St. Joseph's Hospital, his family posted on a Caring Bridge site.

A mass to celebrate Crosby’s life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, his mother, Becky Crosby, posted on the Caring Bridge site. A reception will follow in the parish hall. Holy Spirit is at 4465 Northside Dr. NW in Atlanta. A separate funeral mass is planned in Crosby’s hometown of Valdosta, his family said.

Crosby’s death came as his parents were preparing to welcome a grandchild, his mother posted online.

“Neal Carter Crosby arrived last night,” she posted on Caring Bridge. “He is a healthy baby. Mom and Dad are doing great, too. This is much needed gladness for our family.”

The death of the young coach shocked the Meadowcreek community, as well as friends and former players. Knox Marchman of Augusta told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that Crosby helped him earn a college scholarship to play baseball by moving him from second to third base as a middle school player.

“If it wasn’t for him,” Marchman said, “I’m not sure what would’ve happened.”

Crosby joined the Gwinnett County school system in 2011 as a community football coach at Meadowcreek. In 2012, he began teaching political science and also coached football and basketball at the Norcross school.
