Family, friends and members of various law enforcement agencies will gather Friday to say goodbye to a longtime police officer who died Monday night while assisting a stranded motorist.
The funeral for Elgin L. Daniel, 53, will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Greater Travelers Rest Baptist Church, 4650 Flat Shoals Parkway, Decatur. A graveside service will be held following the service at Fairview Memorial Gardens, 376 Fairview Road, Stockbridge.
Visitation will be held Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Horace A. Ward Funeral Home in Stockbridge.
Elgin had been employed as a Henry County officer for two years after retiring from the DeKalb County police force after 26 years of service. Officers from both the Henry and DeKalb county police departments, as well as other metro officers, are expected to attend the funeral service.
Elgin, an Atlanta native, died after being struck by a Ford truck, allegedly driven by Ruben Marin-Garibay, of Stockbridge. Marin-Garibay was arrested Tuesday evening on charges related to the hit-and-run collision. A roadside assistance worker was also struck, but is expected to survive his injuries.
Elgin is the fourth Henry County police officer to be killed in the line of duty.
