A Fulton County convict has escaped from prison near Rome two years after being sentenced to 20 years for a series of violent crimes.

Garrett Terrell Shields, 44, escaped from a work detail on Sproull Road near Trimble Way off of Kingston Highway on Thursday, Jerome Poole with Floyd County police said.

Shields is described as a 5-foot-8 black man who weighs about 198 pounds. He was last seen wearing an orange sweatshirt over a white shirt with a blue collar and white pants with a blue stripe. He also was donning an orange toboggan hat.

He was sentenced in October 2013 for a number of felonies committed in Fulton County in 2007, including aggravated battery and aggravated assault. His maximum release date, at least until he decided to release himself, was Aug. 29, 2022, which indicated the second half of his sentence was probationary.

That may no longer be the case.

Poole warned the public not to approach Shields but to call 911 to report the sighting.
